Extensions are a great way to add space, and light to your home and can often be done without planning permission. Even with planning, extensions are so ubiquitous and well established in terms of their constraints, that planning is usually not an issue and certainly somewhat more predictable.

Extension design is simple in itself but can often negatively impact the existing spaces especially through a loss of light in what becomes a ‘deep plan’. Careful design is required to avoid providing something new while making existing rooms miserable. This becomes especially challenging where you extension faces West, through North and to the East (The top half of the compass)… More than anything, this is what Architects contribute…integrated design and a holistic view. Indeed some of the best architecture happens at this scale.

Extensions are also an opportunity to start an overall renovation process. Typically the new build will be to a substantially higher standard of insulation, but it is possible to upgrade your existing fabric to bring these in line.
