Imagine a house that maintains a minimum 20 deg C 365 days for around €100 per year. Passivhaus design achieves this and more. Until 2019, the perceived extra cost of achieving this practical environmental standard was seen as a ‘nice-to-have’ but the introduction of the NZEB regulations to Ireland means houses built from 2020 must now meet higher levels of insulation and thermal performance in any event. Plus they must have Mechanical ventilation, assuming the standard of construction is sufficient to achieve good air-tightness. With Passivhaus you opt for more insulation and better windows, but you save on the underfloor heating and radiators. Heat is instead provided by a Mechanical Ventilation System with heat recovery and an Air to Water heat exchanger. So the cost gap is gone. Plus you continue to save on ever increasing fuel costs for the lifetime of the house, whilst playing your part in saving the planet.
